Survivor’s Lookout to Government House
Drenched in history, a stroll along this area of the Esplanade is a must for any visitor to Darwin. It was here that the city’s first substantial buildings were constructed, including the Post Office, the Courthouse, and Government Offices. Also here is Government House, the oldest European building in the Northern Territory. Despite being heavily bombed during World War II and damaged by three major cyclones, Government House has been restored several times in recent history and looks much as it did when it was built in 1878. Further along, an exhibit at Survivor’s Lookout provides a snapshot of the city’s history, including the Bombing of Darwin.
